The Sega Genesis was one of the two great 16-bit systems of it's time, the other being the Super Nintendo. As Sega was not able to obtain the trademark in the US, the unit was called Genesis there. The Genesis had two major addons: a 32-bit extension called 32X and a CD-ROM drive called Mega CD.

DGen is a free, open source and portable emulator for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive systems. Retroarch is a multi-emulator app that supports dozens of systems. As you might have guessed, SEGA is one of them. The app supports Master Drive, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, and 32X in total so. The PowerPC and Intel Macs are totally different architectures, so you are correct, you could only really emulate a PowerPC install on an intel machine, versus virtualize Windows/Mac OS/Linux on a intel machine. There are some PowerPC emulators, but the one I know of for OS X would be PearPC. I have used PearPC a very long time ago, and don't.

System Emulation on the Mac platform

Once upon a time there was a website called emulation.net. It's a parking site now of no particular interest, but at one time it was the site for anything involved running things that don't run on Macs, on Macs. This site hopes to be a pale replacement. Or maybe a bit tan.
The emphasis of this site will be on free and open-source emulators, but I won't rule out shareware either.

What qualifies as a Mac emulator?

The key thing on for this website is that it is supported by its authors or affiliated groups on the Mac platform. Since the advent of Mac OS X and SDL, a lot of these packages are trivial to maintain as cross-platform code, doubly so because of the number of open source projects out there.
My preference is for open source emulators that run on MacOS X on Intel or are shipped as universal binaries, since Apple no longer supports PowerPC code as of OS X Lion. Mac OS Classic programs may be listed, but in most cases users will have to run a Mac emulator on their Mac (something like PearPC) in order to actually use them. Shareware is fine, but I'll be steering clear of commercial products unless specifically requested by a reader.

What to know before running an emulator

Practical issues: If you're here, you probably already know this, but emulators, on average, are quite a bit slower than native code. This usually won't be a problem for 8-bit systems, but for example any 32-bit architecture is going to need a fair bit of elbow room. Buying more memory never hurts. It's good to have utilities for disk format and data conversion as well.
Interface issues: Cross-platform and command line programs will tend to be not very Mac-like, and may take some work to set up. In addition, older platforms can be arcane, frustrating, just plain weird, or all of the above and may require a battery of tools for your desktop just to get running. That's life in the emulation world.
Legal issues: For the most part, you aren't likely to get in trouble for running an emulator system. However, software is still frequently copyrighted; although many companies are happy to let people copy and run out-of-print titles as abandonware, there can be serious consequences for using software still on sale in a production environment, especially with operating system software like Mac OS X or IBM z/OS whose licensing terms tie the software to specific hardware. Therefore, this site will not link to torrent sites; if you want that kind of trouble, you can figure out where to find it yourself. In addition, you're of course free to tinker with open source software, but don't do like the CherryOS douchebags did and rip off copylefted code. Stealing from someone who's freely giving you their IP is the lowest form of plagiarism imaginable.
